I Knew a Guy Named, Nicky

Recently read on Joe.My.God.  (scroll down to "Apology Revoked")

This can’t be right.  It just can’t be.  I emailed with Nicky.  I IM’d with Nicky.  I communicated with the fellow (Larry) he was cyber-dating.  I communicated with his internet friends.  Nicky once wrote me a very heartwarming email in response to a blog post I wrote about discovering that a blogger friend of mine was misrepresenting who he really was.

I simply cannot believe how gullible and trusting I am.  I actually feel violated because I actually had grown very fond of Nicky.  I’m learning that the internets aren’t such a nice place after all.  It’s a tough lesson.

El bizarreo. I never was a regular reader of Cooper’s. It all never seemed quite right to me. But then again, what do I know? I know someone that was very fond of him, er her, though.

I’ve thought a lot about this thing since we chatted. I’ve decided to revert to my naivete. I’ve decided to think of this revelation of deception (asusming it is true) to be a kind of “terrorist attack” on blogdom. As with terrorism, I will not be afraid. I will not let terrorists keep me from living my life. I will not let those who practice such large scale deceit keep me from enjoying and expanding the wonderful world of blogging friends that I have made here.

I was so disappointed to read this today. I’ve fought for years to be less cynical, but it seems the world constantly proves my cynicism right. “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”.

No, the internets aren’t such a nice place. I think I might retreat for a while.

Alas, the list is long for the duped.

I wondered about Larry — His blog stopped long ago. Was he “real?” Or was he just another creation of “Nicky?” If not, does he know about these revelations? Apparently, based on what I have read on other blogs, there was also somebody within the past year named “Will,” too (but that was long after I ended contact with “Nicky” and stopped reading his blog). Who was he?

Chin up, darling — Such dishonest people spend a lot of time perfecting their dishonesty. I am also comforted that I am in good company (but for bad reasons).

i read the same thing on j.m.g. but haven’t a clue about what he was talking about. seems i totally missed this one and apparently i’m better for it.

I don’t know about this. It seems a little too outlandish for me. Cooper has never replied to any of my emails after the fact either.

I used to read a blog written by a boy who dated cooper for a while, so I don’t necessarily believe this story. Who is Cooper and he is a boy because we can corroborate the fact that another man dated HIM before.

I got sucked in on the a priori ad lib blog a couple of years ago stolen/written by the same woman. Was planning my own visit to see the “guy” who was writing this beautiful stuff and “having stem cell replacement” when I went to Vancouver for a music workshop. Big lie. Felt like I’d been kicked in the gut.

    Hi Curtis,
I just responded to your comments on my blog and thought I would come over and visit for a moment.

I am finding that there are many more facets to this story than I knew. I too, emailed with Nicky a lot, IM’d as well and considered him a friend. It was Nicky who got me started blogging and setting up the IM capability, which I have since removed.

Nicky was very involved with many and the stories each of us have of “him” reveal a little more to the structure of “his” fantasy life. For example, I did not know anything of the person “Larry” but there were others that I remember reading about that Nicky had dated locally ( obviously fake ) besides courting Patrick, who made a trip to B.C. and met “Nicky” face to face. The person Will, was real as well, and still has a blog site. I have a suspicion that Will never actually met Nicky in person and when that was going to happen, Nicky cut it off or exposed who she was and closed down the site for some weeks until the coast was clear and nothing happened from it. I do not have any plans to bother Will with this since he was duped as well, has moved on in his own life and my not even know about this latest event. I also think, Nicky, through his blog, pretended that Will was living with him and even spoke for him a few times when the younger boy was supposedly ill and in the hospital with pneumonia. It is the only possible answer since Will is gay and likes men and Nicky is as we have come to find out, a woman who believes she is a man. There are definitely transgender issues she has dealt with many of her 52 years of life.

There are so many stories and I think every one of us has heard a different version. This must have been very difficult to keep all the stories together and I have come to know that she slipped up a few times at least with me. I am not angry with her but I do not appreciate being lied to whether there was any malice intended or not. That disappoints me more about this deception.

I forgot to say thanks for stopping by my blog and you’re always welcome to come by again. Take care and try sending Nicky an email again in a few day and see if that works.

A good lesson, for some, to stop spending so much time on the internet and get back to real life.

This has gotta be one of the weirdest things I’ve heard of in the blogosphere. Bizarre. Simply bizarre.

I have Will’s comments on this saga on my blog, in his own words…
